Scar Treatment

Scar Treatment

Scars form as part of the skin’s natural healing, but some heal in a way that is raised, pitted, discoloured or uncomfortable. At Private Skin Clinic in Bromsgrove, Dr Sadhra, a GP with a special interest in dermatology, assesses the type of scar you have before recommending treatment. This matters because different scars respond to very different treatments.

Types of scar we assess

Acne scars – pitted or indented scars left after acne, including rolling, boxcar and ice-pick scars.

Raised (hypertrophic) scars – thick, raised scars that stay within the boundary of the original wound.

Keloid scars – firm scars that grow beyond the original wound and may be itchy or painful.

Surgical and injury scars – scars from operations, cuts or burns that remain raised, red or tight.

Marks after acne – red or brown marks left after spots have healed. These are not true scars and often respond well to treatment.

Many people benefit from a combination of treatments. Where acne is still active, getting it under control comes first, and prescription treatment can form part of your plan.

Steroid injections for raised and keloid scars

Injecting a steroid medicine directly into a raised or keloid scar can flatten and soften it, and reduce itching and discomfort. Injections are usually repeated every four to six weeks until the scar has improved. Possible side effects include thinning of the skin, lighter skin at the injection site and small visible blood vessels, and these are discussed with you before treatment. Keloid scars can return, so follow-up is important.

What to expect

Scar treatment improves the appearance of scars, but it cannot remove them completely. At your consultation, Dr Sadhra will examine your scars, explain which options are likely to help, and give you a realistic idea of what can be achieved, how many sessions you may need and the cost, before anything is agreed. If your scar would be better treated with laser or surgical revision, which we do not offer, you will be advised on where to seek this.

Prices

• Steroid injection for scars: £110 per session, or £385 for a course
• Microneedling (SkinPen): from £150 per session

Frequently asked questions

Can old scars be treated?

Yes. Older scars can still improve with treatment, although newer scars often respond more quickly.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on the type and depth of the scar. Most acne scarring needs a course of three to six sessions, and raised scars usually need several injections spaced a few weeks apart.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book a consultation directly with us.
