Hair loss can have many causes, including pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, shedding after illness or stress, scalp conditions, medication effects and nutritional factors. A GP-led consultation provides the opportunity to assess your pattern of hair loss, review your medical history and discuss the next steps.
Concerns we can assess
• Gradual thinning or widening of the parting
• Receding hairline or pattern hair loss
• Sudden shedding
• Patchy hair loss
• Itching, scaling or other scalp symptoms
Your assessment and treatment plan
Your appointment may include examination of the scalp and dermoscopy where appropriate. Depending on the findings, your plan may include investigation, prescription treatment, practical haircare advice, a procedure, follow-up, or referral. The likely benefits, limitations, risks and costs are discussed before any treatment is agreed.
When to seek medical advice
Please seek urgent medical advice through the NHS if hair loss is accompanied by severe scalp pain, significant swelling, infection, or other rapidly worsening symptoms. A routine clinic appointment is not a substitute for urgent care.
